Another travel day

2010.08.20

We traveled a long day today from near Cape Bonavista to Kittiwake Coast positioning ourselves for touring "the Isles" tomorrow.

We drove through Terra Nova National Park, deciding to skip it on this trip. It is intended to preserve the coastal beauty of this region in its pristine form. Other than being totally undeveloped, it is much like the coast we've been seeing in recent days.

Going by Gander, we stopped at the "Silent Witnesses Memorial" to the Arrow Air Disaster of December 11, 1985. Taking off from Gander, all 248 passengers and 8 crew perished in a crash. The passengers were all members of the 101st Airborne Division returning to Ft. Campbell, KY from a peacekeeping mission in the Sinai Desert.

Recall also that when US airspace was closed on 9/11/2001, it was the people of Gander who housed the 6,000 US bound airline passengers for days until flights could resume.

We also stocked up on some food and visited the local library to make use of their Wi-fi.

Once again, we are staying at a provincial park campground, off the grid.

Odometer reads 67,410.
