On a gray day, we went to visit some villages North of St. John's - Flatrock, Pouch (said "pooch") Cove, and Bauline. They are fishing villages. Flatrock had been visited by Pope John who blessed the fishing fleet from there. The rain had picked up in Pouch Cove so we had to just look from inside the rig. We chickened out going up to Cape St. Francis on a narrow gravel road. Bauline is a fishing village at the bottom of some cliffs and we had to make a 5 point turn on their pier to get out.
On the way back to the campground we stopped at the only Costco in NL. We got the usual kinds of stuff but noted some differences from the Costcos at home. First, they had 8 packs of canned Kipper Snacks which I've never seen at any other Costco. Having been smoked, kippers may not be very healthy to eat but, I like kippers for lunch at times. Second, for $75 they had various wine kits that make 60 Liters of wine. It would take years to drink it! Costco & other grocery stores do not sell wine itself as they do back home. In NL, they have standalone combination liquor/wine stores as well as ones distinct yet attached to large grocery stores such as Dominion.
Incidentally, milk is quite expensive here as well as in Nova Scotia. It's over $7 a gallon, although when you can find them, the big containers are 4 Liters and therefore just a bit larger. Most grocery stores seem to have 1 and 2 Liter containers of various kinds of milk.
